This course uses black & white film to teach the principles of photography and SLR camera use. It will provide hands-on experience in the darkroom and instruction on the 35 mm manually operated SLR film cameras. These are photographic skills that are equally applicable to using digital or film SLR cameras. Students will be encouraged to develop the creative aspect of the camera through their personal interest in photography.
Students will learn how to develop film, make prints using enlargers and will be introduced to print toning and the creative possibilities of working hands-on with chemical processes.
Students will be shown the use of the Photographic Studio and relevant photographic and other equipment. The course will build and expand the students’ creative control of the camera and further develop darkroom skills.
Medium format film cameras will be introduced and the use of fibre-based paper will be encouraged in the darkroom. The majority of the work will be directed by the students’ own projects and interests. Students will also have the chance to exhibit their film and digital work at the year end exhibition.
